Help Me Understand This...

Last week I did a complete tranny flush, and changed the filter. All went well, and I went on a 3-4000 km trip, checking the fluids as I went along. All were good the whole way.

About an hour away from home on my way back, I stopped at a fuel station and shut off my truck. Turned it on again after about 5 minutes and it made one weird rattle for a few seconds, then returned to normal. Tried it again and the same thing. Sounded like it was coming from the starter. So I drove it home after deciding that everything was OK (didnt check the tranny fluid then though, wishing I would have) and drove home.

Truck didnt hiccup at all besides that one time, during the whole trip. Got home, checked my tranny fluid and its a liter and a bit low.

So I checked it the whole way, checked for leaks, etc. the whole way, and now its low, after being fine for the whole trip.

How can that possibly be?

After yanking off the torque converter cover and looking for problems around that area, there was no leaks, no wet spots on the truck, no extra fluid in the rad, truck shifts fine, whatever that weird rattle was has disappeared(making it really hard to look for a problem) and from what I can see I need to replace a liter or two of tranny fluid.

Please advise!

Just add what ATF you need and keep checking it again. Could have been the down pipe starting to rattle. My is starting to rattle.

Nah, I had to laugh cause it was something I'd have said!

Is it still making the rattling noise at startup?

I'm not Canadian, but I've been there before and I live close to Canada... does that count? Maybe I have Canadian ancestry through, because its not unusual for me to end a sentence with "eh"

I agree with the "air" theory. Might have been caught in the torque converter (contains a large amount of oil). Keep checking the oil level and you should be ok if it happened only once.

I was actually thinking of the air theory, but blew it off, because I did drive about 2500 kilometers before the level actually dropped (approximately).

Forget the air theory, trans fluid must be checked
"hot". Are you checking in "park",or "neutral"?
