We have a 2011 Ranger, 2.3 auto, two wheel drive, 100K. We had the transmission range sensor changed as it was getting very hard to shift, to the point that I was afraid that the shift cable may break. It also was very hard to get it into park. The new range sensor cured all of those issues but here is what his happening now: When I put it in drive and start going, the truck doesn't shift out of low on its own. I have to put it in second, then manually up into drive. It shifts fine from then on, both up and down shifts. Hot and cold engines makes no difference. I can even come to a complete stop and start out again and it goes thru all of the gears as long as I leave it in drive. If I put it in park again it wont shift out of low. The truck did not do this before we had the range sensor changed. I thought that the range sensor just told the computer what gear the truck was in, operated the neutral safety switch and controlled the reverse light. Does anyone know if the range sensor also controls shifting?
I'm not a tranny guy but if your sure the replacement part is the right one, is good, you have it properly indexed such that the shift cable is indicating & calling for the correct gear, it would suggest you may have more than one problem. Seeing as how you seem to like turning your own wrenches, use, borrow, or come by the inexpensive ELM scan tool, as discussed here Low Cost ELM Scantool - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com) & running FORScan diagnostic freeware (that's tweaked for Fords as this powerful combo can query All of the vehicle computer / controllers for trouble code clues), on the viewing device of choice & have it scan for trouble code clues & post All code Numbers, as they can help Focus a troubleshoot. Let us know what you find.
