5r55e problems
I have a 1997 ranger 4.0 with the 5r55e transmission in it. Yesterday it drove fine, but today i got in it to go to town and when I put it in gear it kills the engine.
Sounds like the torque converter is locked up. Is the something in the transmission that would cause this, like the tcc solenoid. Can the ECM being bad cause this problem,.
Im from old school, all this electronics is well above my pay grade.

These transmissions had issues when new.
Check the electrical connections on the exterior of the transmission. Easy to do, might be an easy fix. Emphasis on "might".
I think you need to find a good trans shop or Ford dealer who can read codes, otherwise it's a lot of guess work.

^+1 on checking the electrical connections. If ok & the tranny fluid level & condition check out, try starting it in "N" , then pushing the OD button on the end of the shift lever & note that the dash "OD Off" lamp is Lit, then see if it stalls when shifted into Drive.
Also consider using, borrowing, or coming by the inexpensive ELM scan tool & run FORScan diagnostic freeware on the viewing device of choice as discussed here Low Cost ELM Scantool - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com) & have it scan for trouble codes, as this combo can access & query All vehicle computer / controllers for trouble code clues, then post All code Numbers, as they can help focus a trouble shoot, in case you have more than one problem.
More trouble shooting thoughts for consideration let us know what you find.
