I have a '84 351W in my Jeep with a totally cobbled together accessory & drive setup. 3 bolt balancer from my original 302, who-knows-what water pump & crank pulley, Saginaw P/S pump on a BC Broncos bracket (that one was intentional), and a 3G 130 amp alternator swapped in. I'm getting alternator squeal at startup, and the P/S pump has always squealed/chattered when working hard. I'm sick of chasing issues with it and want to put something in place to kill off my drive issues once and for all.
Seems like from what I've read, mixing and matching accessory parts is tough due to all the variations over the years. Right now my setup is very compact which makes it fit nicely in the CJ engine compartment, it seems like most of the factory setups kick the alternator and P/S pump way out to the side. Even half of the aftermarket setups I've looked at, in addition to being hideously expensive, kick the accessories way out to the side. I see a lot of discussion about the Explorer accessory setup being a good fit, but they all reference using the Explorer harmonic balancer, which I can't (obviously). What are my best options here - can I use the Explorer setup with a different 28 ounce balancer, some aftermarket setup, or is there another factory setup that's super compact? Or do I need to look aftermarket and just really pay attention to fitment/dimensions?
