Water Pump & Alternator Alignment

Hey guys,

I have a 1984 rx7 that I put a ford 302 in it. It is from a 1975 maverick or grandada. Either way it is in and it runs but I have no idea how to connect the alternator and the water pump to the main pully. I can get it so the alternator is connected but then I run out of ideas on how to get the water pump attached also. I have included some pictures, one thing I thought of was making a new alternator bracket that is flush. This pushes back the alternator into the head which make s this not possible. What can I do to make the alternator and the water pump work? Am I missing a critical piece?

I believe you have the completely wrong brackets for the alternator.

Try getting the brackets and pulleys from a 289/302 mustang or a truck with a 302. There are literally dozens of pulley combinations between the crank, water pump, alternator and power steering. I suggest you pull the entire set from one complete vehicle. That way you should have something that lines up correctly.

the alternator is driven by the crank only,were the water pump is driven by the crank & power steering pump. 2 different belts.

A lot of car applications use a single belt to drive the water pump and alternator. Early Falcons and Mustangs were this way. A separate belt was used for the power steering pump.

As co425 posted, try to get a complete front pulley assembly off one vehicle. It will save you a headache or two.

Be aware that starting in the late 70's Ford went to a recerse rotation water pump on the small blocks. Make sure your water pump is compatible with the pulley set you end up with.
