Tonneau/bed covers

So what’s everyone doing for tonneau/bed covers? I’ve always had soft roll up(truxedo lo pro) and I’m debating getting hard roll up this time.

Is it worth the $400ish more over the soft roll up ones? I mean I guess they might be little harder to break into but if a thief wants in they’ll get in. So is it worth getting hard roll up one and if so which brand/model? Thanks

the two covers I’m debating are truxedo sentry ct and the bak revolver x4s unless you guys recommend something better??

i have used almost all hard covers! or about to!
My 1st was the tri-fold, 2nd is the bak revolver x4s, 3rd will be the retractable on order with the 2022
All 5 can take 500LB of plywood on top! the revolver can be a problem in the winter below freezing as it sticks down! but if you have anything long sticking out the box like 2x4's you can roll it onto of it and it will stay there! also ford parts had there own bak revolver x4s with the ford logo in it but cheaper! its the same cover! see if they still have it!
honestly i dont understand why anyone would bother with a soft cover on a expensive truck!

Bak revolver x4

I’m on my second one. Both have served me well. Best of both worlds. Supports weight. Rolls easily out of the way when bed access is needed. Watertight save for the tailgate area. Water tends to collect on the tailgate cap that runs down the tailgate and inside the bed. That isn’t a bedcover issue so much as the design of the tailgate cap that directs water towards the bed.
5 yr warranty. I had to replace my first one because the seals tore at the front edge. Bak replaced it two days later no questions asked.

Had a roll up cover on my truck, it only lasted 18 years. Only possible downside was having the small box at the front of the bed. Now have a fold up, forget the brand. Happy with both. Roll up seemed more secure, but neither got tested. I installed the roll up and the folder, Got lazy and ordered the factory folder on my purgatory order. One piece hard cover or open bed not for me. Like the security and weather protection of the rollers and folders. Neither limited the usefulness of the bed.

What's the climate like where you live? I am about positive I'm going to go with a Retrax roll up cover. Just need to get my new truck and the transfer tank in it before I order the custom length Retrax. Until the truck shows up I'll just be biding my time looking for stories to back up my decision, or to possibly dissuade me from it.

Take a look at a Peragon. After researching this for a month decided it is the best choice for me. It doesn’t block the rear window when retracted. Plus it is easier for my wife to open up as all she has to do is stand on the running board and push down and it will retract.

So far I've had a Pace Edwards retractable, and will never get another. The spring mechanism became seized and froze constantly no matter how many times I took it apart and lubed it up, and it took up bed space because of the canister that holds the rolled up tonneau.

Right now I have a Bak Revolver X2 hard roll up, I've had this one for 6 years and when the 22 I have on order arrives I'll be using/buying the newer version of the Bak hard roll. It hasn't been a perfect cover (felt on inside peeled off, weather strip in tailgate lip is peeling back, both easy fixes) but very versatile. I like that they roll up and give you full bed access, don't block the rear window when rolled up unlike tri fold types, you can open and close tailgate with cover closed, and they're low profile. As mentioned above they can freeze to the tailgate like any cover but the trick I learned was to just use my fist and give it the hammer fist to break the ice free and then you can open the tailgate.

If you haven't yet received and installed the Paragon I would encourage you to look for something else. I loved mine the first year I had it. But the quality just wasn't there. After a couple of years of fooling with it I took it too the dump. Perhaps, in all fairness, the quality has improved since 2007. But I could not in good conscience recommend Paragon to a friend (or anyone else)

Wishing you better luck.

I’ll throw in an emphatic +1 for the Sentry CT, I have had 2; one is on my old F150 had it for a little over 3 years and the other was one of the first things I bought for my new truck last month. Ive never left it for extended periods with valuables in the bed but it is worthwhile peace of mind when Im on the road with luggage, coolers, tools or guns and need to stop for gas/food on the road. A real thief who knows what’s in there can get into the cover (or any of the others for that matter) as easily as they could the cab so it isn’t foolproof but it keeps people honest. Although one point that sold me on security is apparently there’s a test out there that showed the Sentry and Sentry CT design makes it a lot harder to jimmy the release mechanism with something like a prybar/coat hanger/slim Jim with the cover closed than with some of the others. I’ve never seen it but have heard it referenced in more than one place. Looking at the underside of the latch mechanism though it does have a small barrier that appears it would serve to deflect anything that was slid in while it was closed at an angle that would make it difficult to catch the release wire, so there’s that.

Overall it’s a simple but very effective design, and it it looks very clean on the truck. I really like the matte look of the canvas on the CT over the slick vinyl of the Revolver or regular Sentry, and being able to completely remove the cover was important if I need the full bed. With the Sentry there’s two latches at the back that you just slide out to release the whole cover leaving just the side rails behinds. Reinstalling it is just as easy, locate two pins in corresponding slots and slid the latches back in place. All the others I looked at use bolts and would required tools and a lot more time/precision to remove/reinstall.

only time I’ve ever gotten a little bit of water in it is going through one of those touch less car washes that blast the car directly from all sides with a high pressure stream of water, and even then it was only a small trickle at the corners that stayed there and went out the weep holes in the bed floor, wasn’t enough to flow to anywhere else. Direct rainfall or washing with a hose has not been an issue.

I ended up adding the Ford branded hard folding tonneau to my order, but am a little nervous about it. Without actually owning any of these, I like the idea of the Bakflip hard folding covers, so I’m hoping that the Ford hard folding tonneau is a rebranded Bakflip… I just hope it isn’t some cheap knock off though. I’ll admit, I’m also interested in a camper shell/topper too and may end up going that route after a while, but for now I’ll start with the tonneau. I do like the idea of the rolling covers that can lock anywhere, and more importantly allow a bike or kayak rack to sit over the cover, but I’m really not a fan of it rolling up and taking space up inside the bed. I think some will roll up over the top (which could be another issue with over the top racks), although considering the added cost of these, I decided that the hard folding makes more sense for me.

I could not keep the rails mounted to the bed, they kept sliding around. The strap used to pull the cover closed kept breaking at the attachment point. The metal flanges that the little rollers attach to kept bending and some of the rollers came off. And from day one in the Georgia heat I could not open the thing without burning my hands. Had to carry gloves to open it. It took up a lot of space in the front of the bed when open and was vulnerable to damage when open. Finally by comparison to many other covers, the install was difficult.

Maybe they've fixed all that. It's been a few years.

I've been reading and reading and reading on these covers and been leaning towards bak revolver x4s then I get someone throws in a sentry ct review and changes my mind towards the sentry ct. only covers I’ve ever had have always been truxedo lo pro and they’ve always been good to me.

I am a BakFlip Fan - I have had them on all my trucks. They make a roll up but I prefer the Tri-Fold. With the Bak tri folds you don't lose any bed space because the last fold goes virtually flat against the back of the cab. They are pricey but in my opinion well worth the cost.
