I had issues starting my 92 F250, it would only click and wouldn’t even try to turn over.
I tested voltage to the starter relay on both sides, tested voltage to the starter which all checked out good. Then I tried to bridge the gap with a screwdriver to engage the starter and it still wouldn’t try to turn over. I then pulled the starter and hooked up directly to battery at which point it wouldn’t turn over without any load attached.
I then replaced the starter and she started with no issues!
now after about a month I’m running into a similar problem, however it works sometimes and doesn’t other times. I go to start the truck and I hear the click and it won’t turn over. So I turn it off, pull the key out and then try again and usually it will go after the second try.
That's not an ignition issue but a starting issue. Make sure all of your battery cables and wires to the starter solenoid are in good condition. They shouldn't be cracked or frayed and green corrosion is a NO-NO.
If it were an ignition issue the engine would crank but never fire. At least, that would be for a gas engine...
Probably a connection, or the solenoid, or the starter has an issue. Battery terminals, wires at the solenoid, wires at the starter, and starter mounting bolts. If all are clean and tight it's probably the solenoid or a starter problem.
Sounds like like the new starter was a parts store reman. Lots of problems with them and it also depends on which one you got. For reliability the Mitsubishi and Denso starters (Genuine) are hard to beat. The Denso offers the highest cranking speed and the Mitsubishi is know to last the longest.
