I've been doing alot of thinking out here in the Land of Oz, especially since I don't have any money to do anything. Anyway, right now, my truck has a 351M w/Cruise-o-matic. I have a C6 sitting in the garage waitilng for install.
Now, I have a parts truck handy that has all clutch linkage (mine has no clutch parts left at all) and the transmission in place.
Having too much time makes you think too much. Now, I'm thinking if I have THAT stuff, why not hunt down a 292 or 312? What the hey? And there's companies out there, and also vintage speed equipment, to make my truck the real "period" hot rod that I'm after! I'm already going to restore it to original cosmetics, but why not go all the way??! YEAH! YEAH! YEAH!
Man, why can't the parts truck have the engine too? I want to rebuild the engine in class next semester,so we'll see. I'm sure my comments are going to excite a bunch of you!
Sixoh,
I say go for it. You are in the right part of the country to scare up a y-block out of a farm truck and maybe even a pair of big-rig rams-horn exhaust manifolds. The y-blocks have a really cool exhaust sound combined with the solid lifter tick. Nothing like them. They are tough. Print out John Mummert's y-block tech tips before tearing into it.
What tranny do you have?
Good Luck!
Brett
P$. $tart $aving your pennie$ for the rebuild part$.
Hey that's great,
I am a Y block fan, I am roding my Y with a blue thunder and hedders. Good luck in your serch for a Y maybe you can find one in good shape.
Well, at this point, I have a C6 sitting in the garage, and the parts truck I just bought has the standard trans in it w/a floor mounted shifter. Is that one going to work, or is it geared funny since the parts truck is a '58 F350?
If that tranny won't work, I'll try to find some manual trans somewhere. I'm just anxious about the Y-block and want to go bring it home! Prob is - I need to part some goodies on my parts truck to afford it! It's always something.
Since this engine's in the junkyard, can someone send me a pic of their Y-block so I can see what they look like finished? Also, what's the best way to squeeze as much HP out of it as I can? I'm not sure if it's a 292 or 312 yet.
I agree the Y block sounds good. My 272 grumbles and roars with a completely unique exhaust note that's unlike any other engine type. It's different, very individual, and I love it.
This was Fords version of high performance or at least one of them. It is a 57 312 with VR57 McCulloch supercharger. I have a 57 F100 and I will be building one like this. I have about 85% of the supercharger setup so far.
These Y-blocks are good looking. I think it's the valve covers. I also like the T-bird name and logo on them. What color are the Y-blocks supposed to be for the '56 - '60 range? The guy in Hemmings who advertises engine colors skips over those years!
There's a bunch of different colors, 56 was yellow with grey valve colors as far as I know, 57 had a red intake with black valve covers with a black block(were the heads red?) 58 same( I think) 59(don't know) 60 had black heads and block with a red intake and valve covers. I think the y-block is a very cool idea for that sixty. The y-block is such a sweet sounding motor. -4speed(I really only know the colors of the 60 and 56
Hey that's kool. I like the fact that Ford used different colors and mixed and matched colors on the engines. That's sweet!
I'm bringing my parts truck home tomorrow (I'm sure the landlord will love it). I've got big plans for it that, if I weren't at a resto shop, would be just that - big plans!
I have a 1959 F-350 dually with a 292 and 4 speed manual.
I am trying to figure out if I can put a 5-speed in (for overdrive) or a 2-speed rear end (stock rear end (Eaton?) is geared pretty low (4.88?)). I don't really need the dually option. I had a Gear Vendor overdrive in my diesel rig but one of those cost 10 times more than what I paid for the truck.
I do not know what types of trannys were used back then and if modern trannys use the same bolt pattern. Are there bell housings available that would make a swap easier? I would like to have the option of P.T.O.
Also, has anyone swapped in any other types of leaf springs? I guess I could go with lighter springs since I don't plan on hauling any really heavy loads (I just like the truck).
Thanks for any help.
If you will post this as a new thread I'm sure you will get some responses but with it here only a few of us will see it and I unfortunately don't have a answer for you. Sorry.
If you go to Yahoo and type in Y block, you'll find a site that specializes in Y-block rebuilds and speed equip. They have an adapter for a 5 speed manual to Y-block. They suggest getting it out of an '88 - '93 Mustang.
