They are good engines, with 164 HP at 3800 RPM, they are no powerhouse.
Do you have a two speed rear axle? It appears your axle was part of the special order.
Depending on axle ratio and the overall frontal area of your truck, you are looking at running into a wall at 60 to 70 mph.
Back to the engine. These usually have a Holley governed carb, with an ignition governor as well, although I am not clear on all that. There are a couple threads on this in the Tech thread up top.
You will have to clean out the gas tank and make sure it doesn't leak. Reproduction tanks are available--same as the pickups.
Anyway, once you freshen up the ignition, getting the carb to work right would be the next step. Rebuild kits are available. Proper float level, and a good power valve usually solve most issues. Then on to tuning up the idle. These usually run a little riich afaik.
Exhaust manifold cracks or warpage is another one that comes up. As OEM, there were no exhaust manifold gaskets. Sometimes there are heat sheilds, which are part of an exhaust manifold gasket. You'll have to fire it up and get it hot to figure this out.
If you have ticking lifters, clean oil alone might win them back. You'll have to feel your way on that.
