I recently needed to shut my engine off for a few minutes, and when I turned the key to re-start it, the Wait to Start light did not come on, and it wouldn't start..The engine was hot enough that it should have started w/o the GPs. I waited a few more minutes, and the (non) events repeated--no WTS light and it would crank, but not start. I reviewed the repair manual, and prepared myself for a session of testing and diagnosis on the glow plug system a few days later. The next day the WTS light worked, and it started normally. Ever since making significant repairs to the glow plug system a few years ago, the WTS light has never failed to shine even if the engine was hot, and the GPs were not needed. Fortunately this all happened at home, but I would have been in a real pickle had it happened where the stalled truck was in the way. Any thoughts on the cause and solution to this event ?
It's not the glow plugs. How old is the pump? When a pump starts to wear out, hot starts become an issue. Also the fss could be having a problem. If this happens again, remove the wire from the top of the pump, and put a jumper from the hot on the battery to the FSS. Try starting it up. If it starts you're not getting power to the shutoff from the harness.
as said in your other thread, the glow plugs shut off at around 120 degrees. when it will not hot start, try pouring cool( NOT ICE WATER) water over the injector pump.
if the engine then starts, the injector pump is shot.
I would hate to think I need a new pump--the truck only has 50K miles, but I will do what is necessary. What is the FSS ? I read through the repair manual, and saw no mention of FSS or anything with those initials (fuel system sensor ??)
Fuel shutoff solenoid, on top of the injection pump. Drivers side front terminal iirc. No power to it and all she’ll do is crank and crank. The wait to start and fss are powered by two fuse links on my 90, your truck might have regular fuses being an obs. Next time it does the no start, run a jumper from battery positive to that terminal and see if she fires
Problem happened again. Ran a jumper wire to the front terminal, and could hear the solenoid click--did this several times just to be sure. Removed jumper wire and truck started after cranking several times. I'll run the ruck in the yard for a while and try the cool water trick to see if that' helps.
