I have a '64 with a 223 Inline 6.
I'm super green and I thought I'd get an updated manual for my engine...mostly to help me identify parts and doo-hickey's. (Yes, I'm that green)
To supplement my shop manual and a Chilton's manual, I picked up a Ford Inline Six book that covers 144-, 170-, 200-, and 250- CI engines from 1960-1973.
I thought that would cover my '64 223. After getting it, the introduction, states that this book is for the 3rd Generation engines...
1 Generation is was a series of flat heads that included the 226- and 254-cu engines in production from 1941-1953.
2nd Generation was a series of engines build between 1952 and 1964 and included 215-, 223-, and 262-ci versions.
So, my question is: is a 3rd Generation engine similar to the 2nd Gen, specifically close to my 223?
I thought that the heading stating that it 'covers from 1960-1983' would cover my engine.
I really just want to use it as a reference, not tear down. That's way out of my league.
I also thought the dash after the numbers...200- was meant to include all engines in the 200 cu range...and now you know the rest of the story.
Be careful with that. Bad information is worse than no information. You can get more accurate info here or other places on the net. A shop manual specific for your truck is a GREAT idea if you are completely green. You'll get that money back the first time you don't do something foolish and break a part unnecessarily.
