351W Engine Rebuild Recommendations

I am rebuilding a 1983 351W block to go in my 1994 F150. The truck is 4X4 with 3.55 gears and an E4OD transmission. It will be running a 4BBL until I can get a Holy Sniper type fuel injection unit installed. I am going to use the stock computer to control the transmission. The tire size has not been determined yet but will not be larger than 35’s. Truck will be used for everyday driving (for my son) and pulling a trailer with an RZR and motorcycles. I would like for it to sound and run good. Current specs are:

GT40P heads with Scorpion 1.6 roller rockers

.40 over 12cc dished pistons with stock rods

Calculated 9.51-1 compression ratio

I’m thinking if using a Weiand Stealth Intake WND-8023WND

I would like to know what camshaft and pushrods to use and any other recommendations

I would forgo the carb. step and go to a Stinger PimpX Shift setup. Much easier and it controls the engine plus the trans as well.

I Agree. Unless you're just dead-set on Holley Sniper I would take a look at PimpXShift for engine and transmission control... fully tuneable MegaSquirt.

Why not use the '94 block? It is roller cam ready, where the older block is not (would need link bar lifters to run roller). Flat tappet certainly works & is cheaper, I prefer roller is all.

Even with a built engine, I would re-gear for the bigger tires, especially with plans to tow. 4.10 for 33" or 4.56 for 35" tires. 3.55 with 33" is not great, especially if the cam selected pushes the torque curve up the RPM range higher than stock.

Add an ARP hardened oil pump shaft to the list.

Pushrods, you won't know the needed length until heads are bolted on and you're installing the valve train. I lucked out, stock length were right on so I used them.

Minor correction, the pistons are 0.040" over, not 4/10" over.

You could run this on the stock PCM if you select a cam with EFI friendly specs and initially use the stock intake. Once ready for aftermarket controller, PimpX Shift & better intake would be like a stage 2.

What is your power goal? I don't think it is really necessary to swap to a carb.

The roller motor in your '94 is superior to the 83 block. I would be rebuilding the roller.

With the stock roller cam, gt40p heads, and 1.72 ratio rockers, you'll be at or just above 300 HP. This will run on the factory ECU, and probably plenty of power for your boy.

Switching to a Sniper TBI setup isn't going to gain you anything over the stock injection setup with a PimpX, and it's going to be more expensive. You do you, but it seems like a waste of money.

More info on my setup

Probably only going the go with 32 or 33s max
Looking for about 300HP

The 94 block is trash (It hydro locked)
It is a MAF engine not MAP
New EFI intake is $900 plus new injectors
New 4BBL intake $300
Friend selling me a Sniper for $600
Not running enough HP for a roller cam conversion so just sticking with a flat tappet
I bought the GT40P heads from a Mustang guy. They already had the 1.6 roller rockers so I was going to use them unless the 1.7 rockers are a lot better.

How do I check the pushrod length after the heads are installed?
