how can i get about 9.5 compression on a 1979 351w. i want to rebuild it using later fuel injected engine pistons, the cheaper the better. what about heads? which are the best 351w factory heads? i want to get to 14 seconds or less in the 1/4 mile with my beater. right now it is roughly 15.5 right now with a 302.
Well you have a few options here. You can change the heads out for some GT-40, GT-40P, or GT-40X. If you want to really put a set of bad a$$ heads on there go with the world casting windsor jr heads. Made by roush and pretty inexpensive when compared to other heads. Also look in the tech article section. There is a compression ratio simulator to use to figure out what would need to be changed out. The simulator asks for what you know and fills in the rest. Hope this gets you started in the right direction.
The 351W has an advantage of bigger bearings and a much better rod:stroke ratio than a 347. Disadvantage is that it's larger and heavier. GT-40P heads are a good budget upgrade, Roush heads are an even better (but more expensive) option. The "big-port" '69-'70 heads can be made to work well if you do some exhaust port work. (Powerhouse Heads does good work on these.)The Edelbrock Performer RPM cam/intake pkg. makes for a strong 351W. Hot Rod did a budget build of a 351W using a Performer RPM intake, 750cfm Holley, Comp. Cams 268 cam and stock GT-40P heads and got 325hp.
