PAGING Pirate alignment specs for lifted Excursion
Pirate, please share your recommended alignment specs for a 4 inch lifted Excursion. I am finally swapping steering gear to Blue Top. I currently have the 2 degree caster shims installed. Looking for the ideal alignment specs to minimize wander. Thanks in advance.
thanks Pirate. Yes I’m taking it back to correct the toe. So far the BlueTop steering gear is light years better than stock steering gear
hate to burst your bubble but blue/red top are stock steering gears. They are simply stock boxes that have been rebuilt to bring them back into tolerance.
but no doubt any worn out part is going to suck compared to one that is sloppy.
blue/red do a nice job rebuilding them but they are still “stock”

no doubt they are a stock steering gear box. But I figured they have to be way better than the Auto part store “rebuilds”.
mine wasn’t leaking but the amount of play and memory steer was just out of control.
I checked the rest of the front suspension and it was all good. The steering okay was strictly from the steering gear.

.
understood, I just get nit picky on the details.
are they better than auto parts rebuilds ? some are some are not. the problem with auto parts rebuilds is you don't know which company is building them.
I had a Gear from Autozone that was every bit as good as the color tops. I had to return 2 motorcraft boxes in a row, you just don't know until the thing is in your hands.
I think what you really get with the color tops is consistiency and probility. that said I have had a red top on my personal Excursion for over 10 years.

that you are very correct on Motorcraft. I had a buddy that wrenches at Ford have to replace 2 as well. Only on the third Motorcraft box was the steering correct.
I’m just happy that I got a good one from Blue top. (Knock on wood). Just need to get the alignment fine-tuned and I will be good to go.
Success. After “debating” with the shop about negative toe equaling toe out, I got them to adjust me to positive toe. Tech at the shop invited me out to the shop and showed my on the screen that the toe was now set to Positive .05. I told him this was fine.
i drove the Excursion home, and immediately noticed Improved steering. Gone is the dartiness from before. The wheel just stays centered now.
only change from before was setting toe from -.03 to +.05.
37x12.50r17. I’m running at 40PSI all around. Do you recommend higher?
Lower.
at 35 psi each tire will support 2755 pounds so 2755 x 2 = 5510 pounds
the Excursion's GAWR or Gross Axle Weight Rating is
front 4700
rear 5250
so 35 PSI is your base number that will support your Excursion fully Loaded to it maximum GVWR.
from 35 psi you can adjust up or or down a few psi to balance the handling to suit your preferences
FWIW I run 40x12.5x17 and at 25 psi they support 2680 each
I typically run 26 front , 24 rear. this combo descreases understeer.
locally my driving is twisty country roads so I try to balance crisp turns with tracking nice and straight at freeway speeds.
