One way to i.d. these overdrive toploaders is the tailshaft housing. Speedometer exits left side of case, on regular toploaders, the speedo cable comes out the right side. Some overdrives had alum cases also, Regular toploaders are always cast iron. I had one of these in a Mustang, 67 Fastback 289. I also had a regular toploader in the car at a different time. The overdrive tranny was a waste. First gear is much lower than a regular 4 spd, and 4th is overdrive, the consequences of this is that spacing between 2nd and 3rd (1to1) is too far. You find yourself lugging the engine in third and overreving in second. They are strong trannies as in all toploaders, but not as sweet as a regular toploader.
