Another Romping Thread

Alrighty, I have a romping problem on start up that started around 20k miles ago. It’s a 1995 with and E4OD and roughly 240,000 miles. Romps on 95% of start ups, cold, warm, hot, doesn’t matter.

list of everything I have done to try to fix it:
  • ICP sensor (live data shows the sensor working)
  • IPR Valve
  • CNC HPOP (fixed some drivability issues and seems to be great so far)
  • HPX line
  • 5w40 synthetic rotella oil (did nothing, switched back to 15w40)
  • archoil oil additive (have run it for about 15k miles)
  • EBP sensor and tube (just checked and they aren’t clogged after 15k on the new sensor and tube)
  • Irate regulated return e fuel system (got sick of fixing fuel leaks and had low contribution in cylinder 8 that this system fixed, fuel pressure is good)

Things that I doubt cause it and why:
  • TRS causes it for some, but even starting in neutral I have it, and everyone that I have read about changing the TRS didn’t romp when starting in neutral.
  • Weak injectors: The PO had stage 1 full force injectors put on the truck at 210,000 so they are only 30k miles old
  • Injector o rings: When I had my fuel bowl, there were no signs of oil in the fuel, and I do not burn enough oil to ever see a difference on the dip stick.
  • Tunes: The PO had the tunes put in with the injectors at 210k, so this issue started 10k miles after.
  • Maybe my new Motorcraft IPR was bad out of the box? It runs great after I blip the throttle on start up, so I doubt it.

Could a weak LPOP cause this? (I think mine is original)

I am officially out of ideas. Any input would be appreciated

Thumbs up

Today is Father's Day.

If you got kids, spend it with them. If your old man or gramps is around, waste the day talking to them or being with them...if not, call me and we can work on the truck. Deal?

Lol fair enough. No kids, and my father and gramps are both retired and soaking up the sun in Florida, so a phone call is about all I can do. However, I’ll be plenty busy moving the balance of my furniture and garage crap to the new house tomorrow, but I’d definitely like to pick your brain about it after the holiday

Yup, injectors could do it.

Loooong day of moving, so I’ll have to pick your brain another time. Grandparents are in Miami and my dad is a little outside of Ft Lauderdale. If they were in west palm or Sarasota I would be more inclined to visit haha.

That’s why I tried the archoil in hopes that it would clean out any stickiness in the injectors. Oh well, if it’s an injector or injectors I’ll leave it be. Drives great just a start up issue, so I can live with it over replacing injectors with only 30k on them

You put 30k miles on the injectors, but how many miles did the previous owner put on them? The romp is probably related to worn out poppet valves/seats.

I’ve put 20k on them and the PO put 10k on em. I have the service ticket from when he had the work done at a shop that’s local to me

So they are remans and could have 750,000 miles on the oil side which could make them shot.

Reman injectors don't get freshened up on the oil side? That seems stupid for how much they cost.

Nothing cost effective can be done to the poppet valve and seat. Once the oil side stops to work properly it gets tossed.

Good to know. Are there other symptoms of worn out poppet valves and seats that I should look out for? Or does it usually just cause a hard start/romp issue?

While on injectors, can they pass oil internally into the fuel side?
