It normally requires a new/different wiring harness, since the op/alt gauges versus op/alt warning lights for the (oil pressure and alternator) are different. I do believe even the printed circuit w/gauges- w/o gauges is different, therefore different wiring harness. You can just add a set of aftermarket secondary 2 or 3 mechanical gauge (op, temp, alt) set up fairly easy.
Well getting and changing a complete wiring harness to go from warning lights to actual gauges (using the OEM instrument cluster) NOT so easy IMO. But adding a set of aftermarket gauges (like the ones that hang under the dash), should be fairly easy. Here is an example of warning lights and an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. Interesting how the truck appears to NOT be running, but showing 1000 on the RPM scale.
Or...line of site good.
Or even more line of sight gauges that make for safe driving. Especially with a green zone quick look scale.
Now this guy is looking in a whole other place and has a lot to check. That is IMO why line of site and green zone gauges are a good idea. Or just rotate the gauge to have the needle pointing up. Makes for an ol racer trick, all needles NORTH, keep your foot in it.
Thanks. Replacing the wiring harness is more than I’m willing to tackle. It would be a clean upgrade but not for that amount of effort.
I’ll look for some clean gauges.
Replacing the harness probably isn't that difficult. I'm not sure, but there should be a different harness for behind the dash, which feeds the gauges. Then there should be an harness which runs from the dash harness to connection points for the voltage regulator and and the battery, to feed the ammeter. Then there is just the single wire for the oil pressure gauge. If you're good with electrical, you can just run your own wires for those gauges, and leave your original wiring alone.
Interesting concept, replace the Custom cluster and idiot lights with a Ranger cluster and abandon the alternator, oil pressure and temp lights and hard wire the Ranger gauges.
Are the sensors on the Custom able to drive the gauges or are they specific to the on / off lights?
A warning light sender is different from a gauge sender when it comes to oil pressure and coolant temperature. The oil pressure gauge will need to source its positive voltage from the Instrument Panel Voltage Regulator, like your Fuel and Temperature gauges already do.
