I have a 1978 ford f100 302, i need a recommendation on a muffler that sounds good but wont be heard in cab. Its a single cab. Im looking for a nice tone, i dont want my truck to sound like the lil race cars thanks
SO, i got a quote from muffler 🌎 for about 600$ installed for a duel exhaust that sounds good the guy says? I have to get my headers installed first, he says he wont install them. You guys think thats a good price and should i get headers installed??
A good set of Walker turbo mufflers will do it if you run the pipes out the back, either to the side or under the bumper. The bigger the pipe the more the sound.
Thrush chambered mufflers are flowmaster 40 knockoffs. Half the price but the same sound.
If you have a dual set up I'd go 2.5" for single 3" They'll give you a nice rumble at idle and won't be loud in the cab.
I have always used those Walker Turbo mufflers on my '77., larger pipes sound softer as exhaust gasses move slower, 2.25" OD works well being easier to fit in places than larger ones. Dual 2" pipes work great too. Smaller pipes have a sharper tone or "note" due to higher velocity exhaust gasses.
magnaflows. worth the cost, fairly quiet on idle but sounds great when you get into it.
The new Flowmaster FX mufflers are pretty much a blatant ripoff of the Magnaflows, but are much cheaper. I have some on my truck. They are much quieter than the Thrush mufflers I had before but with a really nice tone. You do hear them in the cab, but they're not terribly loud. They do generate quite the growl when you really mash the skinny pedal and it gets noticeably louder, but that is what I actually want them to do.
I had a video of it running but i cant find it. I realy likevthis sound. Throaty but not to noise and sounds different than most everything else on the rd. This is 2.5" in 3" out. Dumps over the rear axle. I couldn't find a way thatvi liked to run the exhaust all thecway.
Not a fan of Flowmaster, because... well... they don't flow well. I have a set of Walker Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers on my 78 Bronco and am very happy with the sound.

yea thats ok I'm sure the drone they're infmaous for is still there.
I just picked up 2 of these not sure how loud they will be installing today
flowmaster hushpower pro series 2. They are not cheap vs other mufflers but are suppose to have a nice non raspy not crazy loud type tone. 2 cones inside for baffles.
if their too much I'll add a resonator in front of them.
Positioning of the muffler is as important as what kind you buy. A muffler at the end of the pipe will probably be loud, almost anything short of a glasspack placed well forward on the exhaust will be noticeably quieter. Example - I run a Flowmaster (55 I believe) on a single 2.5" pipe, but with the muffler well forward I get just a exhaust note with no drone or loud blat. I hear it a little when I stick my foot in it, but that is all. I have had my fill of loud exhausts, so this works for me.

If you want quiet from idle to about 2,500 rpm, get these. They do give that hotrod growl above 3,000 rpm. I got a single 3" in/ dual 2.5" out, pipes turned just fwd of rear tires. It's a good muffler if you are looking to muffle your exhaust. Really no drone at all. If you want loud, just go with glasspacks and call it a day.
