I have a 1979 Ford f100 with the 3 speed and 4.9. My shifter went all out of wack so I got it towed to my mechanic. He’s saying that it needs a new column. My column is the non tilt, and that seems impossible to find. It also needs to be OEM. Does anyone know where I could find one? If not is there a rebuild kit or something available?
Those 3 on the tree parts are not reproduced. Even if you find a used column it will more than likely be on it's last leg. A new column and a floor shifter would better suit your needs.
Well, there are a few options really, I have a 3 on the tree on a 78 F250 with a 351m, and you can buy the shifter collar, and replace that, but for the shift tube, which broke for me, I just re-welded the tab back on (it was in good shape) and its worked for the last 4 months.
I did find a NOS shift tube on ebay as these are impossible to find, and can show you what a new one should look like. Also consider replacing the shift fork bushings (in the engine bay, on the column, right near fire wall) and that will help with some of the slack.
After that, if you have P/S or not, a guy on ebay rebuilds them, but the cost is hefty, about $700 including you shipping him a core, but its brand new thru and thru. just ebay 1978 3 on the tree shift column new and it should pop up.
