1995 F150 2wd with 4.9 straight six and E4OD transmission. I need to change the transmission but I also need to change the engine oil pan. I've changed plenty of engines and transmissions separately but I'm wondering how hard is it to pull them together from this truck.
I can be done but you have to jack the truck way up in the air to make clearance for the trans to swing up with the motor or remove the front clip.
Removing the front clip makes working on the motor much easier but getting all the body panels lined up again can be difficult and everything under the hood has to come off.
You could also remove the front clip, and pull it straight out. Dropping the trans separately truly would take just about as much time as removing the clip. It took me about a day to get just the motor out, Would probably not be much different with the trans.
Thanks. I've pulled plenty of engines and a few transmissions but rarely pulled them together. I'm just thinking it's time to replace a leaking oil pan when I replace the transmission.
When I pulled my 4.9L to do my engine swap a few months back I saw one "lifting loop" (for lack of a better word) near the front of the engine. I wanted to lift it from two points so I hooked my chain to the loop in the front and to a bolt in the back of the head. It turns out that you need to tilt the I6 quite a bit to get it out, and when it was all said and done after hours of frustration I had moved my "hook point" on my chain right up front near the one "lifting loop". If I had lifted from the one "lifting loop" to start with I would have had it out hours sooner... I guess I "outsmarted" myself.
So, learn from my experience and save yourself a lot of frustration, and just hook to the one "lifting loop" near the front. (Assuming that the '95 has one like my '91 did.)
Now, on to your question... I didn't pull them together, but you have to tilt the I6 a lot to get it out, so you'll likely need quite a bit of ground clearance under the truck to allow the transmission to tilt down that far.
Something else I would highly recommend if you do pull your front clip, is replace your radiator support bracket bushings. I am getting mine to day. I just got the set for the bracket and the cab bushings from energy suspension, part number 44123R.
Why not drop trans out the bottom, then pull the engine out the top?
Only remove what you need to.
Pulling whole front clip seems like a lot more work.
You are going to be separating them anyways.
When I dropped my E4OD, I made a wood box that fit the trans pan, edges of the box fit against the bolts, simple for jacking it out and in again.
