I have a 1999 Ranger and it's my first "computerized" truck and the "Check Engine" light went on and stayed on. It is colored yellow and is not blinking if that makes any difference.
I treat my truck like any other truck that I've had over the last 3 decades and I feel if I check the oil, water, tranny, rear end fluids weekly and change my engine oil every 3000 miles I'm in good shape -- this I've been doing and all is well.
The truck seems to run BETTER now since the "check engine" like came on!!
How can I find out (without paying anyone any money) what triggered the alert to come on?
Try calling the local parts stores and see if they will pull the codes for you and then let us know. The reason it might be running better is its running in fault mode now, before the PCM might have been using a bad reading.
