Before I start swinging a sledge hammer and go medieval on getting the drums off I wanted to see if there was a smart or preferred way to do it. Never worked on these old drum brakes before and don’t want to make a stupid and avoidable mistake. Thanks!
the wheels do turn freely but I suspect the adjusters are frozen!
Which way to you spin the adjuster in the event they are not frozen. Not even sure where it is as I never thought about that. I am done under the truck for the day but can look tomorrow.
I am going to go the patient work to get them off. I am not in a hurry as there are plenty of other things to do. Plenty, plenty, plenty.
hmmmm. There does look to be something that needs some sort of specific key. Upper left in the rear drum picture. Round thing with a pin hole and a slot….need to look at that closely tomorrow
Looks like flat blade screw between the studs. At 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock on the rear drum. Guessing there is at least one more. Looks like 3, 7 and 10 o'clock on the front.
I'm not sure he has a smoke wrench. You'll need a hand held impact driver for any screws. Rapping on the drum with a serious hammer now and then while you soak things down in between will help. Heat is what you really need but smacking them hard will probably break them free eventually. A couple pound hammer. They won't likely just pop off with a little pry bar. May not have been removed for 40 years. Hit them on the face near the axle flange. If you smack the back sides you'll break chunks off the outside rim of the drum.

I don't know it the F100 is the same but I found this among my saved pics
They mentioned the screws. The drums will not come off if these are on. Once off, some people leave them off. I kept mine on.
Mine required soaking for quite a while. I was in no rush, so once or twice a day I would take my impact screwdriver and whack them a few times. Eventually they released. After that, it is still a major pain to get the drums off.
