Air conditioner

Hey guys, it's been a while. I'm having a weird ac problem. My ac works fine at low speeds,45 and under. When I get up to highway speed it will go warm. I put some coolant in and the gauge reads good. Y'all think the clutch is going out? High pressure switch? This is the first time in ten years it has acted up. Input appreciated.

I'm not too familiar with the vacuum system on diesel engines, but vacuum is what operates the AC system. If it were mine, first thing I'd do is check out the AC's Vacuum system and see what it's doing at & above 45 mph. If it's dropping vacuum that may be allowing the blend doors to change position and give you warm air.

There's a shim on the clutch that might need to be changed. You might find the info in the tech folder. You check the clearance on the clutch and install a different shim if necessary.

Are your condenser fins straight? Any crap built up between it and intercooler? Pollen, leaves, Dogwood tree fluff
Clutch gap set right?

I don't believe it's a vacuum issue. I have a cut off valve to the heater core.
I'm leaning more to the clutch.
Do I just pull the clutch and remove a shim? Never done that before.

The blend door is actuated by an electric motor, not vacuum.

Correct. The shim looks like a plain vanilla washer sitting between the end of the compressor's shaft and the cavity in the pulley/clutch assembly. The correct air gap for the clutch is shown below.

I don't think you just remove it, I think there are different sizes and you need the right one.

On my 2001 PSD only one shim in there.
I removed it, checked the gap, gap seemed within specs. so I left shim out.
Then did the under hood mod with Ford Ranger valve.

If you have some time, the evaporator coil is probably in desperate need of being cleaned as well.

I don't mind being wrong on occasion, and this time I'm happy about it. I know that around this time frame the Rangers used vacuum to control all of the AC. Never actually had any issues with that part of my Ranger, but I always wandered when I would.

Guess it isn't. Didn't want to assume that you did have the cutoff valve and that's what I was thinking if it had been vacuum operated. I just learned about the heater valve mod myself. As soon as I need to drain the coolant, it's getting done to mine.

To be honest I don't know why Ford decided to have vacuum actuated anything on a diesel truck. It's not like a gasoline vehicle where there is a ready source of vacuum so they had to install a vacuum pump. The knuckle seals for the ESOF hubs are notorious for leaking. The AC vent controls then default to defrost. If they were going for parts commonality in the climate control system they could have just made it electric actuation across all versions of the vehicle. The blend door already is. It's a head-scratcher. Sorry, rant over.

I use my AC almost daily.
Yesterday I noticed was not working.
Tested electrical connection, and then realized.....
My AC clutch plate fell off.
I found it under my hood on the frame rail today.

Does anybody know the part number of the bolt that holds it on??

And does anybody know the torque setting?

I was in it a year or more ago, and I thought I used loc-tite and a torque wrench!

I think it’s a common M6 or M5 flanged head bolt. Just go the the hardware store and get a replacement.
