I'm looking at getting my 1996 F250 frame hot-dip galvanized. The process is done at about 850 F. Is there any issue heating the frame up to 850 for a little bit that I should be aware of? As I understand it, these frames are low carbon and not heat treated, but I wanted to be sure before getting it done. For comparison, powder-coating is done at about 425-450F.
1340f is the lowest critical temperature I can remember for steel... and a quick webbysearch agreed.
I remembered it in C(725) which made me go look to make sure.
I do know that normalization occurs at lower temperatures than that,
but normalizing shouldn't do anything
bad for a truck frame, that I can think of.
I would expect that your plater would know better than most...
I had my Jeep frame hot dipped galvanized and it turned out fine. Are you going to leave it as is afterwards or paint over the galvanize?
im thinking that I would paint it too. Trying to find a durable paint that will stick to it.

they weren’t certain. But they did suggest avoiding the quenching process to let it air cool to help prevent warping.
If you intend to paint over the galvanized frame there is a process that you have to adhere to. One is there is a window of time after it is galvanized that there is a minimum of prep work, but that window is small. If that way won't work then the next, what I did, is to sandblast the frame. It's called sweep blasting. You're not removing anything in doing this and the angle of the blasting is on a 45 degree rather than straight on. You still need to prime it before paint. The the last is a 2 year wait and all you do is clean the surface as normal. All of this is online if you want to look it up. I used Bill Hirsh frame paint on mine from TP Tools. Amy good paint will work and you can also powder coat it too. My paint has been on several years and it holding fine.
I'm trying to pick between galvanized or painted. I've powder coated a couple of motorcycle frames, but I'm looking for a tougher coating for the truck chassis.
As you know the galvanizing will even be inside the frame where it's boxed. If you do galvanize it you should sandblast if first. I deal with a galvanizer and they hate people bringing them things that still have paint and crud on them. It contaminates the stripping tank needlessly.

What are you paying for hot dip? I did a 8x20 trailer frame I built. It was 3500.00 for the service but it has lasted 15 years. U haul is really big on using HDG on trailers and truck parts which is what gave me the idea years ago.

there’s a place a few hours away that quoted 0.37/lb of steel. Minimum charge of $250.00. That’s for acid dip and hot galv dip. 3 mil thick.
