Only issue I can think of with dipping a frame is that it'll be a grand old pain to weld on if you ever need to in the future. Give it a good look over after sandblasting to make sure you don't have cracks or other damage that needs welding up first.

I’ve been going over the entire frame to get axles, fuel tank, steering, etc all drilled or installed before taking it for coating. Only thing I need to check is how much to drill the holes out for. If it’s a 3mm coating, I think that makes the holes 6mm too small. That’s nearly a 1/4” oversize needed for each hole with HDG coating the frame.

how much did you oversize frame holes before getting it coated?

I wouldn't open anything up until you need to...

I’ve debated on bolting and welding spring mounts in place prior to getting it coated.

3mil, not 3milimetres. I think a mil is a thousandth of an inch.

That makes a lot more sense. Good catch.

3 mil is .003". Unless your bolt holes are stupid tight to begin with I don't think .006" is going to change anything.

yeah. I’m going to leave everything as is. Probably weld mounts on, remove the bolts. Get it all coated. Then bolt it back up.

Is there any merit in welding the cross members to the frame rails? Ive seen a very flexy 1988 f250 offroading and the only thing i could figure is that the frame rivets loosened up. A few welds would prevent it from twisting. The perfect time would be right before hot dipping.

I know that my front crossmember needed some welding because one of the track bar bracket bolts is replacing a rivet. I agree that some judicious welding of crossmembers would tie it together without adding stresses. The last thing I have to fit is the steering box. The 2008+ box hits the front cross-member. I think the older SD boxes are supposed to bolt right up to this frame.

Land rover enthusiast have been galvanizing their frames for years because their boxed frames are so susceptible to rust Sounds like a great idea as for paint you probably can’t be 2K Epoxy on top.

I asked my brother, who worked at a plating company that did military equipment, about this and he said to see if the galvanizer could do a Chromate finish on top of the galvanized, which would provide an additional layer of protection and also help paint adhere on top of that.

Supposedly paint doesn’t stick well to raw galv.

Wool cavity wax over all that and the frame would probably last a couple centuries .

I'll ask. The one I talked to sounded like they did the galvanized and then a dip.

I got it back today. Cost double what I planned because they had to sand blast it and I missed some paint. I recommend finding a place that has stripping and derusting dips. I did not get a chromate quench. According to the galvanizer the chromate makes it harder to paint. And the quench could cause it to twist.

im going to paint it black after a wash with white vinegar and a clean water rinse. I’m using Sherwin Williams Direct to Metal industrial paint. It says it will adhere to galvanized.
