I need to replace the running boards on my 2001 F250 Crew Cab. It has a slight lift and oversize tires and my wife is vertically challenged, and we aren't getting any younger. I would like to find something with a good width step that gives me a drop greater than the 3" I currently have, 6" seems like it would be a good drop, and maybe a little bit more. Does anyone have an idea what may be out there?
I installed the oem 2018 and up extended units on my 2000 F350 4x4...has the front picked up a bit...for the same reason. I had a set of the tubular nerf style units on there for many years...since 2001! Love the fact that they were stainless and still looked good, but It was getting where the wife, kiddos, and even me were not getting a good foot hold getting into the truck...plus I've always wanted an extended version to allow some bed access. Everyone kept telling me these couldn't be installed, but they can as you can see. The newer 2017 up trucks utilize different mounting brackets than the earlier 2016 down which is why they were saying the units wouldn't fit. However, I installed the newer running boards utilizing the earlier style mounting brackets and it works. I always like utilizing the oem parts and you can find these on the cheap now since most like the power actuated Amp Research units and Ford is also offering a power actuated option...not sure how those are going to hold up to the elements when off road in the mud and sand...
I have the tubular on it now, but the passenger side front mount broke. I need to replace all the brackets. I like the way that looks on your rig!
The tubular nerf units utilize one front and one rear bracket with 3 attaching bolts that are different than the brackets for what's needed on the regular running boards for the 99-16 units which have 3 brackets per side with 2 attaching bolts per bracket. I like the idea of the extra center support. Thanks for the compliment, I was initially thinking the running boards hung down further than I preferred, but they're growing on me...
I agree on the three wide brackets. I think your height is good, about even with the hub. If you did a lot of rock crawling, that may be a concern, but for typical usage and some offroad use, it should work good.
BWGuardian: Can you snap a few pictures from the underside of the truck focusing on the mounting bracket placement? I too would like to install but need to know which bracket placement spots I can use. I have a 2002 F 250 and have some rust underneath. If I can use the same bracket locations I think I can install your version. A few pictures would be GREAT!)
Thanks,
PJ
Okay, went and took some pictures this morning and there are 4 bolts, not 2 as aforementioned, that hold the upper brackets to the truck. Once those in place and fairly tight, the holes are already there, then you can place the running board on them and figure out attachments. Some of them will line up and the others I utilized self tapping screws, just be careful not to get too tight as the boards are made out of aluminum. When done, they are rock solid!
