I think the hold that hold the clip may be a little wallowed out? I've replaced the clip a couple of times and it almost without hesitation falls right out. I tried putting a grommet in the hole (couldn't get the clip in after), tried putting little rubber bands in the back (held up for a couple of open and closes) and generally lots of swearing (helped me...) . The photo shows a new clip and I have to hold it in place every time I want to open and close my tailgate. Any ideas out there?!
NAPA variety kit. It's pretty big, although I admit I don't know if it's "proper". It looked to be the same as the broken clip I took off, although no telling if the PO used the right one either . Time to jump on Amazon and look for "the exact one" to see if it's different?
