7.3 Godzilla catastrophic failure

I have a 2021 motorhome with the Ford 7.3 v8. It only has 2600 miles on it. About two weeks ago, it lost all power at highway speed and left me on the side of I 95 for 5 hours. Two dealers have attempted to fix it and I was just told the engine has no compression and it's termed a "catastrophic failure" of the engine. Anybody have an experience like this? Ford want the dealer to dissect the engine to determine what failed. Then they will fix or replace. It's been 18 days of nothing happening...frustrated.

Did they say what the "catastrophic failure" was? With no compression, that should be easy to find , as it's either both heads, all cylinders, or timing failure. There should be bore scope pictures for Ford to look at, and you too.

If the tech has pictures of what failed, Ford should have an engine on the way immediately. I'm sure Ford wants to be 100% sure the engine can't be fixed/patched, back together before replacing.

Either way, no excuse for dragging this out more than a day or two.

They did tell me no compression at all and that the motor was seized. Service manager mentioned the potential of timing as a cause. It's just been a grind to get any answers and, of course, the supply of parts being backed up is already being used as an excuse for the delay in getting it back to me.

When it failed could you crank the engine over, I don't mean start it I mean would it roll over? With all the vehicles waiting on chips you would think Ford would have plenty of parts laying around.

No, I could hear the starter energize, but it would not turn the engine over.

Has Ford approved a tear down yet? A tear down before replacement shouldn't be necessary at 2600 if damage is seen with the bore scope.

Funny you ask. They did approve a teardown, but the service mgr at the dealer talked them into forgoing it due to low miles. Now Ford has agreed to send a new long block.

Glad they are doing something, but at 2600 miles, I would want a complete new engine, but since these engines haven't been out very long, the long block will most likely be new anyway.

That is very unfortunate and hope you get it resolved in a timely manner.

I didn't realize these were interference engines where loss of timing locked them up.

Unfortunately, this can happen with any engine. Had a new truck crap an engine at 4k miles....it really pisses you off, as you expect it to be flawless and provide hundreds of thousands of worry-free miles.

How can you test compression on a seized engine? Unless they mean they tried to blow air in and it wouldn't hold once they cut it off? But that's not how you check compression anyway.

Should be as easy as putting a wrench on the flywheel to determine " seized ".

Glad you are getting a long block. I'd hate to be running a rebuilt engine that had seized.

Mine failed at 428 miles - didn't seize, but CEL came on and lost all power. Apparently dropped a couple of lifters. Ford sent a complete engine assembly in 4 days. No tear-down. Basically had to beat any info out of the diesel tech. Apparently, these failures, and the reasons behind them, are kept on the down low. Dealer's response was "It failed and Ford is replacing it under warranty" and there was nothing else. That was 7,000 miles ago. Took it in for maintenance 2 weeks ago and had them check a "clunk" - it turns out that one transmission mount had ZERO nuts on it - and it's partner mount on the other side only had one nut on it. Add to the mix that the truck has had electrical gremlins since day one and that the 10R140 recall is going to have them remove the transmission and replace the number 1 planetary gear assembly... well, I've had enough of this bad one - just made a deal on a Powerstroke because I just don't trust it.
