I've got an 09 F250 with a factory integrated brake control box.
I bought a new dump trailer and if I set the gain to any value and max out the slider bar the trailer brakes barely activate. I'd expect at 10 they would lock up. (bad or invalid assumption?)
Is there some other option or is there something wrong?
Thanks for the reply. I called the place I bought the trailer from and they said brakes will automatically adjust after about 100 miles of use. I have only about 25 miles on the unit so I'll give it some time. They don't recommend manually adjusting the brakes.

The Dexter Never Adjust do need to be adjusted. You can't haul around the trailer without brakes. The brakes also only adjust in reverse like other drums.
I installed new Dexter Nev-R-Adjust brakes on my RV trailer a couple weeks ago. Initially, the brake action was weak. I drove around the storage lot for a few minutes, going forward and backward. It turns out reverse is not necessary as they only adjust in the forward direction. Then I got on the street to burnish the brakes. Now the brakes are great! I went from a setting of Medium-8 to Medium-3. With a few more miles on the brakes I may have to go lower.
I borrowed a dump trailer that had zero brakes. It turned out that the passenger side brakes weren't even connected. The driver side brakes were connected but probably wore out from carrying all the brake load.
Go drive around town. Low speeds, lots of easy going brake applications. New trailers are known for this. My dump trailer required the controller be set to 10/10, when new, to get any braking. After a bit, it got broken in. Now, I’m at 4.5/10, when empty.
The factory trailer brake controller in our 2017 and 2019 F-350s has two settings, mode (effort range: high, medium, low) in the instrument panel Trailer Setup menu, and gain (numeric value in the mode setting). Don’t know about the 2009.
