Smile Bouncy Rear End

I have a 2000 7.3 Ex. This is my second Ex. I just purchased about a month ago. The previous owner installed an Air Lift 72000 system. I had noticed when driving at 75 to 85 mph on the interstate, there was significant bounce to the backend when going over bumps and dips in the road. I've never used an air bag system before so I checked to see what it was set to. The bags were set to 26 PSI. I deflated the bags down as low as they could to down to 5 PSI. I was hoping this will let the shocks do their jobs. It did help but there is still more bounce than there should be. I checked out the shocks and they appear to be brand new Motorcraft shocks. The rear springs appear to be original. I don't see any visible issues with them.

I am looking for suggestion on what to do here. Should I replace the new Motorcraft shocks with a set of good Bilstein's or Rancho's? Or is this a bigger issue? I don't really tow with the truck. This is a daily driver and a leisure cruiser for family get a ways. I may someday get a small tow behind camper, but my priority for suspension is definitely more towards a comfortable ride on the highway. .

Welcome! I have Airlift bags on all for corners of my 2003 Ex that I've had since April, so I've been learning quickly. I have found my "sweet spot" to be 30-45psi in the rear (unless I'm loaded & pulling a heavy trailer), but that gives me a comfortably firm ride. Seems if I run them lower or higher when I'm unloaded, it's too harsh. I thought it would ride softer with less pressure, but not in my case. As far as I can tell, I have stock springs and Bilstien HD shocks. Try playing around with the pressure in the bags and see what happens.

A majority of the time if you are getting bouncing it's bad shocks.

Well that's what I thought, but not being a suspension guy, I thought I'd ask for help. I wouldn't think Motorcraft shocks are any good, even if they look brand new. What would you recommend for a good ride?

Never mind, I shockingly did my own research. I just ordered KYB MonoMax Gas Shock 565098 for the rear. I want see how these work out and then I'll probably get them for the front too. Thanks again for your help.

Not very well if you only replaced the rear.

Wow, no need to be so condescending. After all the time I've spent lurking here, before finally finding my Excursion, I was under the impression that this board was pretty well free of these types of responses. From reading plenty of other threads, it seemed as though you were a knowledgeable guy that has helped many out, but I guess maybe that has inflated your ego. Point taken that my shocks are probably in need of replacement, but you've certainly lost my respect, for how rudely conveyed that info. Just for the record, I'm not one who gets "hurt" by words, I just have old school values, so I respect others.

Update: I did replace the front. Still waiting for the rear shocks to come in. Looks like pretty much all shocks are on a back order. Supposedly they will be here on August 10th. I can't wait to get them on there.
