Anyone one ever run air shocks? I'm thinking of putting them on my f150 as the shocks on now are rusted out and basically non existent and it rolls like a dog on corners even at 10 mph. Dad has them in his 81 trans am and handles real nice but it doesn't tow or haul a thing so I'm wondering if they work on trucks or not.
Yep I have 'em. I think many folks here don't recommend them for weak springs for the additional force placed on the mounting points. I went with one more leaf spring in the rears, that raised the rear end another inch or two and my shocks needed replacing like yours and went with Gabriels I believe, sold thru autozone they recommend min of 25 psi so that is what I run them. Work good for me, no problems. When running the airlines where going thru the frame I used electrical flexible tubing so the chafing wouldn't wear them thru too soon ....
Not going to use these for making up for weak springs, my springs are fine my shocks are just bad. I know the rear shocks mounting points are broken easier than most so I'm not going to use shocks to try and haul more
I agree. Shocks are for damping out oscillation. Springs (including torsion springs, such as a sway bar) are for supporting loads, including the transferred loads due to cornering.
Air bags are another option for a "spring" to reduce sway, but putting then inside the shock isn't the way to do it.
I agree. Try new shocks first then if you still want less body roll lok into sway bars. Stiffer springs ( such as air shocks) will make your truck handle like an unloaded f350.
I got fed up with the body roll on my older F150 and robbed the front anti-roll bar from a junkyard 4 wheel drive truck (actually a Bronco). I like the improvement enough that I hunted down a rear bar from a truck with the factory tow package and then I was really happy. (There's this one llllooooonnnnggg sweeping freeway onramp you see)
My newer F150 came with the tow package and dual stabilizer bars already. If I were missing one or both you can bet I'd be straight off to get some. They made a world of handling difference to me.
And new shocks are almost always a good thing, for a variety of reasons.
Let me know if you have any questions about out adding air bags to your suspension. They will help with stability and will offer load support while towing or hauling.
