i smell a bad odor (almost like rotten eggs) when i really get on the gas. is this the cats plugged, and do i really need both or any of them? i`m running both cats with no muffler.( it rusted off)would it hurt the power if i just cut both cats off and went with a good muffler?i know the law doesn`t allow it but i stay in the country, not too worried about that!
herothc,
Getting rid of the cats will improve your performance definetly. I would go with glasspaxs personally, but a good free flowing muffler will help alot, once the cats are removed. Instead of removing the cats, try taking a rod, and busting the junk out of them, that way if a cop looks at your exhaust system, you have them. Also, if your truck is considered an antique, you do not need them.
If you have an efi motor you can get a walker #45166 downpipe($50 advance auto) with a 2.5 inch outlet. it basically replaces the cats with a strait pipe. Then you can run a 2.5 inch from there all the way out the back. Its perfect for a stock or mildly modified engine.
In my opinion a glasspack on a six sounds like a continuous fart, I prefer a super turbo style muffler with packing inside. it gives a little tone but not farty.
As for running rich the first thing I would check is the coolant temp sensor. This lets the computer detect when the vehickle is cold so it can richen it up. if it is bad the computer can continue to run it rich even after it warms up.
Take them off or not it is up to ypu but i have never had one and the motors breathe better. You can replace it with a free flow cat and that will keep you "legal". If you lose the cat the smell will go away. Live on the edge cut them off
It's attitudes like yours that have tripled my inspection cost in the last few years (from $15 to $45) & gotten us the IM-240 roller test. Gee, thanks.
IMHO cats are a complete waste of time from an anti pollution standpoint when we use US military "might" to invade other countries for their oil. Do they have cats on USAF and Navy engines, probably not.
The amount of pollution from a few tanks or aircraft etc dwarfs everyones Ford in this and every other forom on the net.
