I'll be the first to admit, that sometimes it's been shown, that a stick can be smarter than me. It would seem though, that something was turning the diff, and maybe I'm wrong, don't think so, that would indicate one of the IWEs was either engaged, or broken and jammed up somehow, turning one of the halfshafts. Since this is an open diff, the other halfshaft would be turning backwards when in 2H. Think of a rearwheel drive diff on a car, get both rear wheels off the ground, turn one of them, and if open diff, like our fronts are, the other side will rotate opposite.

Ya, that vacuum system can be trouble, but I don't worry about it, I know what to do if it becomes troublesome. Thing is with me, is convincing the dealer there's a problem. I understand their side of it though, if they can't replicate, not much they can do. My '17, the checkvalve was bad,, and of course when I toook it to the dealer, it wouldn't act up. They agreed to just drive it until something really broke. That was through conversation with them, I'm on very good terms with the guys there, so it wasn't anything like an argument, just some guys talking. I went to the parts counter and bought a new valve, stuck it in before I left. Couple days later they called me and asked if I'd fixed it. They reimbursed for the valve.
A regular guy with a problem though, would likely not have had the same experience.
Now they've gone to that motor driven system, is it better, is it worse, don't know, too new yet.
The whole trouble could have been avoided if they'd just stuck with manual hubs. But we both know, these things have become the status symbol for totally nonmechanical types. That's OK though, keeps many people employed.
Toyota design. Solenoid front axle engagement. Trouble free. Doesn’t let you down. But they have other problems. Mostly front brakes and stuff rusts off !n. 15 years is about it ! Kids had a Maverick decades ago. It had vacuum spark retard. Distributor filled up with gasoline from intake manifold. Lucky it didn’t blow the hood off !
Sounds good. Replace wheel bearings also ! you will loose some mileage but you got 4x4 when demanded ! Loved my lockouts on my early Toyota 4 runner. Most likely your truck will be noisier an not turn as sharp in parking lots.
Ya, I've seen those, and I know of a few that say they went with those. But, you can do the same for free. Just pull the power to the solenoid.
Or, you can do it like Ford does with the TOD, [4A], and remove the vacuum line at it's source, and cap the connections at either end of the hose. Either way would work.

It is only a couple miles a gallon difference. I loved those lock out hubs of the 80’s. Chevys full time 4x4 wad great except 13 mpg ! Most likely full time hubs also need a Livernois tune to complete the power module fix !
Disengaging vacuum solves only part of the problem. I already have rounded gear teeth from that issue when an solenoid went bad. The dealer’s warranty fix was just the solenoid. However, I know damage was done to the interface gears by the sound it made when it happened. Next time it happens, something will be damaged more or break completely.

Very possible. I've never asked anyone that has those eliminators, is there a seal on them to prevent water/dirt from entering the bearing from the backside? I've watched their install video, paying attention to look for a seal, and never saw one.
Think the boot is it. I would pack it wit moly grease ! It will need service every couple years might be wisdom ! A boring rainy weekend preventive measure .

You could be right, I'm having trouble seeing that.
Ok guys, the saga continues. They've repaired the front diff., said it had a bad side bearing and metal in oil. Said that would fix it, I told them they haven't fixed the cause. Next day they called, still have problem, (no s***, Sherlock). Ford told them to replace the hubs, they did, still have same problem. Now they say they've contacted Ford to send an engineer out, they're stumped. 2 weeks and counting. I told the gal who called to jack the truck up real high and drive a new same one under it and I'd come over and get it--problem solved. She was quiet a second then laughed. I'm almost at that stage!

Read up on the lemon law. I had a lot of paint issues with a new 94 Lightning, went through the hoops and Ford traded me out for my 95L. The 95 had more options and I had to pay the difference in sticker price. If it comes down to it, you may be more satisfied.
