Hot transmission!

I’ve got a 14’ f250 deleted and tuned. The transmission is running hotter than usual (205-216) when it usually hangs out around 194 and I can’t figure out why. It started this a month or two ago so I changed trans fluid and filter, changed and flushed the secondary coolant at the same time. It worked good after that for 1000 miles or so. Saturday I towed a 7k lb boat for 300 miles with no issue, temp never topped 200. On the way back towing nothing at all it stayed around 207. I checked the level of coolant and it’s low. I put 9 1/2 qts of coolant in when I changed it. I’m thinking a leak maybe? This isn’t the first time of topped the coolant off. I checked around the turbo and it’s dry. I don’t have an egr and it’s no leaks around the coolant reservoir that I see. Also the only thing I’ve changed in the past 2 months is, I went up to a 37in tire from a 35. Gears are still stock.

Y’all have any ideas? I’ve heard these trucks have a common coolant leak but I can’t find one.

Yeah, no codes are showing. It runs fine and shifts fine I can’t figure out why it would be running hotter than usual though. I called a few trans shops and they are think it’s a coolant or circulation problem. I hate to to take it in if it’s something simple I can do myself.

Did the higher temps coincide with the larger tires or did you do the transmission service at the same time as the larger tires? Trying to figure out if you have any data with just the larger tires or just post-transmission service to try to narrow down the culprit. Also, are you losing coolant or just topping off post-service?

Higher temps started about a month after the tires. I checked the coolant when it started and topped it off. I didn’t know exactly how much coolant was in there so I drained and flushed it and did the trans fluid at the same time. After the service it stayed around 194, give or take a few. Now though, it’s running hotter again (207). It’s kind of random, some days it’s fine some days it’s hot. It’s not an trip deal.

194 is a bit low. Search around, but I seem to recall there is a 200 or 205 thermostat in this Trans. What are you using to measure the temp? Your tuner, or an analog gauge?

I’m using the analog gauge on the dash and the digital gauge that’s on the dash screen. The Ford dealership told me I was okay up to 230 but after that I needed to let it cool. It’s never gotten to that temp. I had to top my coolant off again today.

you need to figure out where your coolant is going, fix that, then see where you are. Trans is cooled by a heat exchanger with cooling system.

Okay so here’s what I have found out now. I pulled what I’m guessing is the hot side pipe (pipe at the front of the intake manifold) of the intercooler and had orange coolant in it. Now I’m guessing that’s not supposed to be there? So my plan now is order an aftermarket intercooler and might as well re-do all the piping. I’m going to order the SPE intercooler pipe kit but any suggestions on the intercooler? Anyone have any brands they’ve used and liked or heard good things about? I’ve got my eye on the stage 3 Motorsport intercooler.

AFE makes a nice welded aluminum intercooler as well as Mishimoto also. I'll have to look at Stage 3 Motorsports and see which one they are selling. There's another aftermarket intercooler made by someone. I'll see if I can find it.

How many miles on your truck?

114k miles! I actually just looked at the stage 3 and it’s an afe intercooler blade runner gt. Stage 3 gives a discount to first responders so I’ll get about $100 off of it. Priced right around $990 then.

Really? I'd qualify as well. But I already spent enough coin on my AirDog, the S&S DPK kit and now for a repair on my house.

That SPE isn't cheap but it's a quality set up for sure.

Yeah... Let us know.

I went with a mishimoto intercooler instead of the stage 3. This fixed my cooling issue with the trans. My old intercooler was full of coolant in areas there should not have been any when I removed it. I’ve put about 1500 miles on it and no complaints so far. It performs well, I build boost quicker than before and have had about 1mpg gain. I’m still waiting on the spe piping kit so we’ll see how that does. Thanks for all the input!
