Ahh! Thiefs suck. Need to replace door lock now

Hey FTE,

Over the weekend at a boat ramp some one tried to Jimmy my driver's side door lock. The cylinder is now f'd and the door panel is dented from them prying with a screwdriver.

How can I replace the cylinder clock? I look online for a bit but all the replacements look to be randomized for locks. I want my original key to work with the new replacement. Hope your all's weekend went better.

Damage of that nature of the lock cylinder cut-out are difficult to repair due the many contours that must be maintained to assure a replacement cylinder works when installed. Any major deviation from the original hole's shape won't allow the cylinder to fit tight to the door. Usually replacing the door is the easier route even for a body shop.

You'll need to contact a locksmith in your area (there's one who posts here too) and have any new lock cylinder built to accept your existing keys.

Back in the day... a door lock hole reforming tool was in every locksmiths tool box. Not so much anymore. If you can find a locksmith that's been around since the 70's or 80's you may find someone with one. This is a lock cylinder that can be keyed to your existing door key.

You all are seriously awesome! I'll let you know how it goes.

I did call one locksmith that said It would be about $75 for him to do it and around $25-50 for keying the new blank lock cylinder. I'll call him back after I get the blank cylinder because if he will do it all for $75 that's a deal. looks like the cylinder and reforming tool is around $60-70 altogether after shipping etc.

Also yes if I would have caught them they might be fishing him out of the ocean! Good thing they didn't get in. The door they tried, had a kink to it where you had to turn the key and hit the button at just the right time to get it to open all the way. I think that was my saving grace. If not done just right, it will partly open and I think that's the only thing that saved me, it was partly open when I got there.

Now I'm thinking about putting a camera and hidden kill switch in it like some people do on their motorcycles.

That's a really fair price. Looks like you found a good locksmith.
