Extended Life Coolant

Looking for advice.

6/2014 at 115K miles I flushed old yellow/gold coolant and switched to Peak Final charge global extended life coolant. Now have 137K on truck, @ 22K and 7 years on coolant. Question is keep running coolant? Change coolant, water pump, oil cooler o rings,(pump and cooler o rings original) or none???

I know, drive truck more. Soon!

Peak says 8 year service life on the FCG ELC. As for the pump, oil cooler and so on, doesn't sound like it's driven often enough to even warm up so if they don't leak don't touch.

I wouldn't worry about it for now if nothing is leaking. Not sure if they make test strips for ELC or not but that might help if piece of mind is what you're after.

A Blackstone report could probably answer that, pretty sure they do coolant
edit: coolant not mentioned on their site but others do, but it may be cheaper to just change it if you're concerned. I put mine in in 2009 but ended up replacing it when I did the water pump in 2017. I too was a little concerned about the date although it looked like new still. The water pump was a good opportunity to just swap it out. Another option you could just drain the radiator and refill every year or so which would freshen it up.

I got right around 100k out of this last one before it started leaking. I think the original one lasted to around 145k or so but I wasn't keeping a maintenance log then, and technically it wasn't even leaking. I was attempting to install a new thermostat and broke the bolts off in the pump. Somebody with the patience and tools could have corrected it and left it on there but I figured it was probably a good idea to replace it at that that point anyway. I assume the original pumps were better quality, as factory original parts usually are, and lasted longer than parts store stuff. Now I would just assume 100k is all you'll get out of them, which for most people means it's a job you'll probably only do once or maybe twice.

Interestingly, I had to replace the WP pulley as well mid-way through this last pump. It wore down and started allowing the belt to ride up against the inside edge and squeal. A new one from NAPA fixed it. I would have replaced it at the same time as the pump last time if I'd have known that would become a problem.

OP, it's getting to be time to replace the coolant. As mentioned, 8 years and done. Deal with the leaks as they come...

IMHO, the manufacturer of the product says 1,000,000 miles, 20,000 hours or 8 years whatever comes first. I would change at the 8 year mark. As far as preventative maintenance on the hardware.... if it ain't broke, not sure it is worth trying to fix unless there is evidence to the contrary.

I recently came out of a store and had a small coolant puddle on the ground. Several more stops and a 250 mile heavy pull home and not another single drop on the ground. Can't tell if it's the thermostat housing, upper hose, or maybe pump gasket. All of it's getting replaced, including coolant. That way I know the health of that most important system. Based on standard reporting data here, I will be good for 8yrs/100K miles. Peace of mind is worth it!

Probably the weep hole on the pump. It can be a little sporadic based on temp and cooling system pressure, sometimes making a mess and sometimes nothing. You’ll see the tell tale white spatters of dried coolant all over the front of the engine and underside of the hood as it drips down onto the crank pulley and flings everywhere.

I wouldn't change any of it, I have trucks that have ELC fills from 15 years ago in service. Contact the manufacturer and ask them what keeps it in service. Years in service isn't the limit it's more of a concern with overall hours.

Definitely not the weep hole. There is a double clamp on the thermostat housing hose. It looks like it's coming from behind there. Guessing somewhere in it's past it leaked from there and the extra clamp fixed the leak. I just ordered a new pump, t-stat and billet housing, silicone hoses, 4 gals of ELC, and a belt. Gonna take care of this problem once and not have worry about it for 8 yrs/100K miles.

They didn't know what I was talking about or recognize the number. They tried to sell me a hybrid ELC that was bright pink, more so than ELC. They didn't believe me that I needed 4 gallons of concentrate.

It was a bad experience when it didn't have to be.

I went a few miles up the road to Tractor Supply and bought 4 gallons of Rotella ELC concentrate and it has been that way for about 7 years.

In that case I'd throw a new pulley on there too. I think the one I got from NAPA was $35 or so. Changing it after the fact is a pain in the butt. Also tempting would be a new degas bottle and it's two hoses and a new cap. Which silicone hoses did you get? I was tempted by the upper one Dieselsite sells but cheaped out on that for now. (Could add that later without too much hassle)
