460 Engine

Can someone tell me if the 78 460 was internally balance or externally balanced.

Or does the flex plate have anything to do with the engine balanceing.

I have a engine that doesn't have a flywheel or flex plate with it and was wondering if it would work with the flex plate off my old engine.

The '78 was internally balanced. Yes, the correct flexplate is very important. If there is any question on what crank it is, it is best to check the casting #. Internal would be a 2Y number and external would be a 3Y number.

Look behind the harmonic balancer at the spacer. If you see a counter weight on that spacer, its externally balanced. A smooth spacer indicates an internally balanced engine.
