2005 F350 Cc 4x4 XLT. Story is trans started slipping and getting hotter than normal. I am taking the truck on a cross country trip pulling my trailer. Just over one year ago I had my trans rebuilt by a reputable local place that has good reputation by many but an **** buddy who runs a shop and this shop does all his rebuilds. Standard rebuild with only upgrade being a billet converter. Anyways, truck ran and shifted great, then on the way home pulling enclosed trailer it started flashing tow haul light after not shifting into higher than 3rd. Truck goes back to shop and is deemed to have bad pressure regulator in pump. Trans comes out and goes back in with a “new pump” (assuming aftermarket). Pump bearing replaced and had to be line bored to make sure it was centered. Truck developed a shifting issue that it would be slow to shift into drive and reverse. It would also not shift at times and get “stuck”. It was deemed to have a selector switch(manual linkage with sensor inside trans) that tells what gear should be in. New one was ordered and would bind not allowing the throw to get into drive or beyond. Switch/sensor taken off new one and put on my old part.(didn’t fix shifting issues) Complete solenoid pack replaced with harness. Truck “fixed” and delivered back to me. Truck would not shift out of first and still had delays. Truck returned to shop. Truck had all my factory parts for transmission selector switch replaced to my factory stuff(switch/sensor included) because it was being commanded into manual first when placed in D. Got truck back and it still had delays and now a very rare intermittent no down shift into first. At a stop it would take off in second or third(not sure) and lug until it got to 25-2800 rpms and then suddenly “realize” it was in the wrong gear and down shift to first at high rpm and would start spinning the tires because it was like doing a neutral drop. Truck goes back to shop. Truck is making intermittent pressure from pump. Pump replaced with complete factory Ford pump. Get it back with still having delays and intermittent not shifting to first. All grounds, electrical connectors checked. Pump making zero psi in park and neutral when it should be 50. Was told one pin on pcm was corroded and it was cleaned(I don’t believe this). TMC relearn strategies reset and now pump making correct pressure. Get truck back and am still having same issues. Truck has had no codes since initial codes that caused new pump(because pressure regulator valve), then the transmission selector switch/sensor. I have been talking to Mark K. Things I am unsure about is fluid they are using at the shop. I have been data logging pedal position sensor with readings always in normal limits as well as vehicle speed sensor trying to rule out inputs the trans uses to shift. However the intermittent no downshift has not happened while I have been data logging. Currently it will shift fine to overdrive and have TC lockup flare(like it locks, unlocks and locks all within about a second or two but enough my rpm gauge goes up and down very rapidly 1750-1600-1800-1400rpm) at about 48-50mph in normal driving. With tow haul on it will not shift into overdrive until about 55-58 mph and will not have any TC lockup until in over drive and 64-67mph. So pulling enclosed trailer on highway roads(under 65mph) it will spin at about 2250-2300rpm and trans temps will get to 200* and hold. Fuel mileage is in the crapper. Truck has not had a tune on it since well before it was rebuilt(yearish before rebuild). Truck does also have a 08-10 pan with correct filter on it(was put on 8 years ago). Nothing new to truck since we’ll before transmission was rebuilt. Some questions. How do I use auto enginuity to monitor current gear, demanded gear and if it has TC lockup. When I do one of the inputs for gear(can’t remember PID) it shows 2 in P,R,N,D and 1. Manual 2 shows 4, manual 3 shows 6. When driving in D it will go 2,4,6,8when shifting but no higher. I would think I would see 10 since it’s a 5speed(yes I know it has 6). Also what are normal shifting parameters? When should it shift into what gears? What gears have TC lockup? What about when tow haul is on? I’m trying to gather as much information because trans shop is trying to help but trying to give as much information to help it diagnosed and fixed correctly. Truck had 178,xxx miles when rebuilt. Now has 181,xxx with just over 2500 miles in the last year since being to trans shop 7 times. Please give me ideas and thanks in advance!
If you're at your computer, imagine you're in the truck. Now, slap the person in the passenger seat, the one with Enter tattooed on their forehead. Do it again and again, each time you think of something else about your truck. Ideas will arrive shortly.
Without codes, everyone is just guessing, but sounds to myike the rebuild is no good.
understand and agree. Was hoping someone had parameters that it should see and when it would shift. And how to monitor for data logging. When and what gears TC lock up happens. My thought was wrong fluid causing issues with solenoids. Or torque converter bad with the lock up, unlock, lock or flare when lockup. Or extremely late lockup in tow haul.
Sounds like the shop is just parts changers and have no clue how to troubleshoot the problem hoping if they change enough parts they will stumble across the fix.
If that post concerns the 5110w transmission, I'd either hold on here to see if Mark K responds - he's the expert here - or send him a PM. He's good about finding these threads anyway, but may be on holiday or otherwise occupied right now. I'd still recommend carriage returns though; he can be a bit testy, but always fairly. He helps a lot of people and I don't blame him for requiring that they help him help them. Wouldn't be surprised if that's why you haven't heard from him already. It's why I've not tried to understand your problem. Respect gets respect.
Let's start with what codes are stored in the PCM? I need code numbers, not descriptions.
I’m working on getting codes from original time trans flashed tow/haul after first rebuild. No other codes have been set since then. Only code on truck is fan code because it has bulletproof adapter and 7.3 fan clutch. Been bulletproofed for 7 years.
I've not had good luck pulling tranny codes with either Scangauge or TorquePro. Assuming that might mean other tools have problems too. Forscan found the codes the others weren't getting.
If it is not shifting to each gear it WILL set codes. Either it is shifting fine and locking fine, or there are codes stored.
It is very possible that the tool used to read the codes can't read Ford transmission codes. I recommend Forscan to read the codes. Download it free at www.forscan.org. Their webpage shows how to select an OBDII adapter. I bought mine from Amazon for less than $30.
