Yesterday the old girl (89 ranger 2.3l 5spd 2wd ext cab) started dumping coolant. It is on the back side of the engine near the oil filter and running down the outside of the bell housing.
I've heard there is a freeze plug in the area but haven't located it yet. Is there one and what has to come off to change it?
Welcome to FTE wood, Jack it up, crawl under and give it the visual "ol' look-see" and check it out! What better way to get to know your "old girl"!

Problem was not the engine block, feeze plug etc. There is a small 3/8 hose fron the heater hose that routes around the valve cover via a aluminum tube. This had corroded to leave about a 1/8" hole. I just replace the whole thing with the hose.
What does that hose to at the intake manifold anyway?

It is where it hooks into the water jacket!
I read somewhere that these 2.3 engines have an external circulation system + this is what you got aquainted with!
I still have to do my system, it's not looking well w/ the aluminum piping, hoses + clamps all looking rusty as heck!
