Recently bought a 1995 f150, 351W, E4OD tranny. Guy who i bought it from said it would need some transmission work, specifically a shift solenoid.
here were the symptoms
Bogging down when shifting into 2nd/limp mode
truck would shift from manual 1st, to manual 2nd, then drive fine, the check engine light NEVER came on. Even trying to **** it off by disconnecting stuff.
battery voltage was low, had a rough start. With low voltage that boosted once the alt kicked in.
i wanted to check out the electronics first, hookup to the solenoid, MLPS, VSS, even the battery, lastly, knew it mightve been a far stretch, but i removed the PCM to find rust, alot of it. Cracked open the case, blown out circuits, sand, melted stuff.
Tested the battery, at about 50% capacity, and the battery was too big by about 100 CCA. Swapped it with the correct battery size, put a new pre programmed PCM from cardone in, she was good to go. Smooth shifts, strong start!
If you want to find the source of the water/rust issue, you can open the hood and hose water on the cowling and window seals. The cowling is an issue discussed here often and info is available to fix it.
