I'm replacing the driver window on my XLT. What is the key to getting the movable slider out of the rail at the bottom of the window. All info I have shows manual window. I have the panel off and the bolt removed and am just a 1/4" from the slider coming out with the window at the midway point. As always thanks for any suggestions. I think I need to remove the bottom panel and take the swing out window out but want to check here first. Sandy
When I pull these, I take all the bolts out of the smokers window frame, and knock it loose, so the window will "fall" out of the tracks, then it's easy to move it off of the window regulator.
Thank you for the quick reply. There was only one bolt to remove and there are several rivets and one seems to go the bar slider. When I removed the one bolt the smoker window bracket. would move out of the way a small amount. See if this pic helps to determine if I need to remove the rivets or just use more force. The bolt I removed is just to the upper right of the large square hole.
Huh, those rivets werent there on my '87. Yeah, if they're holding the smokers window in place, you probably need to remove them.
On my 87, there's 1 bolt under the mirror externally, 1 low down on the inner door, and 2 phillips head screws up on the leading edge of the door, on either side of the upper smokers window hing.

The one rivet in front of my finger is attached to the slider piece which looks to be also attached with the same rivet to the motor piece. It looks like if I remove that rivet the two pieces will separate and I would be able to remove the window. What do you think?

I remove the rivets. punch out the center piece, then use a large drill bit or counter sink bit to cut it.
Take out the small triangle window.
Its easy once you've done it a few times.
Assembly is reverse, but replace rivets with nuts/bolts or what have you.
It sure appears the rivets are the solution. There is only one that is restricting the separation from what I can see. I'll drill it out and see what happens. Thank you and I'll let you guys know how it turns out.
Smokers window... LOL... that's the first time I have heard someone refer to the vent window that way.
The 3 rivets in the cluster in the middle of the door panel hold the window regulator.. do not remove those unless you are replacing or fixing the motor. There is a single rivet further forward under the hole where the manual crank would go, that and another rivet/bolt near the top of the door hold the vent window/front window track assembly, remove that from the door first and the main window will then come out easily.
What Paul said. I circled the one you need to remove. You can replace the rivet with a small bolt and nut, or another pop rivet if you have those handy.
I mis-remembered, there is 1 bolt holding the vent window/channel to the inner door panel.. see that bracket sticking up in the pic below, plus 1 or 2 more screws on the leading sloped edge of the door under the weather stripping.

Mine does not have that bracket but it looks like your pic is the passenger side. Maybe they are different like that? Anyway I had already removed ALL the rivets before I read the post not to do it. I did get the window out without removing the "smokers window" (which is what we called it in high school). As soon as the bleeding stops from the small cuts all over my hands I'll reinstall the regulator and get it all back together. Thanks for all help from everyone.

Where you are pointing to, there are 4 rivets that have to be removed to move the regulator out of the way. Then you can slide the window off. To reinstall just use short bolts to re-install the regulator. PITA, but, have done it several times. Just make sure the front and rear felt guides are lined up correctly, or the window will bind during movement.
EDIT: just realized you are working on manual windows. Should be very similar though to my power windows.

Thanks Kevin. I have it all apart now and about to reinstall everything. Interesting about the window as it seems it is being held by rivets on the small aluminium piece at the channel. My bar that leads from the window to the inside door only goes halfway down into the door. It is not held by a bolt on the bottom. I had one truck that had that so I know what you are saying. The window is power. XLT. Regardless, the window is out and ready for the new one. Sandy
