So here's a bit of an update. I've read multiple sources saying that the output shafts can be swapped without even removing the trans from the truck. Official procedure if full tear down of trans, but apparently several people have successfully done it with at most messing with the parking pawl spring.
One more question - this 2000 front end would have leaf springs, and my 2005 has coils. Can this used axle be made to work with coils?
Does the steering box and / or steering shaft change with a 4x4 conversion? Are the brake hoses long enough?
Even better, I found a salvage yard about an hour and a half away that has a 2005 F-350 dually extended cab which is mostly intact. I'm trying to find out if they would be willing to sell the whole truck, minus the engine, and what they would sell it for. If they won't, they are at least a good source for parts and the shipping cost can be eliminated.
I bought an 05 F-450 4x4 with a clean cab in NE Colorado last year. Have spent some money on it getting everything fixed up, but still is a reasonable priced truck. It is a V-10, but with a new clutch, rebuilt 6 speed transmission, new timing chains, fuel pump, seat covers, exhaust and spark plugs, have it for 11,000. The previous owner had done the injectors, and rebuilt the front wheel drive, along with steering parts. All works. Still need to get the AC fixed, quit a few months after getting it home. Tried to add some freon, high pressure.
