Alright fellas....will be rolling up to ID saturday to help a buddy out. He, for the most part, got in over his head with "preventative" work on his 02. Thinking, he had it all ready to fire up, goes to connect last cable to battery and BAM...instant smell of burnt wires. So far, he found 2 small wires SMOKED at starter relay on p/s fender. After realizing what he did(hooked batteries backwards), he corrected it and went to hook last cable on, again..but this time, the alternator started smoking immediately....so, this is where im at with it. Besides checking fuses, ohming out a ***** ton of wires, connections..etc, ...any other things I should check
Pull the alternator and have it tested. Make have smoked it. I wouldn't try to test it on the truck to see if it puts out voltage. Could cause worse issues with the electronics and ECU
Hey Timmy, Kate and I will be in Challis ID the first week of June. We will be there 2 - 3 weeks then headed out, maybe south, north or east, not sure yet.
As for the truck, check the fuseable links as well, which will be identified as faulty or hood during your testing.
Tell him to stop touching the truck if the batteries are in it!
Once you get it power restored, do a buzz test for IDM/injector function and make sure there is a WTS light. Then, you can start it and make sure things like fuel pump and what not are working.
Perhaps use some black and red electrical tape on the cables to help him out in the future.
Lol...arent the cables already color coded..HAHA
..think he needs thicker glasses..LOL
...appreciate the info guys. Yeah, this outta be fun. Especially spending others' cheese😁
..Sous..ill be in Meridian until this is done. Gunna wrench on mine as well along with, taking a day or 4, taking breaks to wet a line! I can stay as long as i want..etc, so if ur close, gotta hook up slick...

Yes, yes they are colored...
We may be going to Boise the second half of June and we usually stay at the KOA in Meridian since it is close to family. We typically despise staying at a KOA, but it is close to their home.
I'll be in touch via text when we know which direction we are headed after Challis.
lol...whats cool about,..."batteries hooked wrong"
However, if you think about it, the truck did receive too much power. With the 1 battery hooked wrong, it did receive 24v😎
I hate to say it @timmyboy76 but I think all of the electrical/electronic stuff in your friend's truck is now suspect. Trying to track down all the compromised wiring and components will take the rest of your friend's/that truck's life.

that's what im worried about FTN....good thing we got 2 things..i got the time, he gots the dough..lol...
all I know is, this party ain't gunna happen without pics😁
Welp..before making the truck up there, decided to know what steps he did..while having batteries hoojed wrong, he then went into the cab and tried to start it... He sent a pic of the "found" wires so far that are melted but think, and like what FTN has said, this truck may be done......(pic is of the 2 wires that feed the starter relay)
