I have a 1989 ford f 150 with a efi 302 and auto tranny, just bought a 1996 f 150 for a donor truck and it has a efi 351 windsor also with an auto tranny. Would love to put the 351 in the " 89 " I know the firing order is differant . Do I need to use the eec computer from the 96 ? and is there anything else that would have to be swapped out also ? Would appreciate all advice moving forward with this Thanks to all that willing to HELP me Randy
You can't use the '96 PCM without transferring all the wiring and the transmission too. Easiest solution is to pull the 5.8 and strip all wiring from it, bolt that into your '89 with the appropriate flexplate of flywheel, reattach the engine wiring that was originally on the 5.0. What trans is in the '89? The 5.8 will run on the 5.0 PCM but ideally you would have a 5.8 version, the exact model will depend on what trans the truck has.
the sticker on the door pillar says trans "T" I think thats good news about the computer with the firing order I don't know alot about that stuff but from what i'm getting from you and what I had hoped is it might be a plug and play
That is the AOD, the '96 will also have a 4sp auto but it's the computer controlled E4OD which is totally different.
You need a very specific flexplate to mate a 351w with an AOD, you cannot use the one that is on the 5.0(different balance) or the one currently on the 5.8(different offset). The 351/AOD combo was only ever used in the mid '80s Crown Vic so that is what you need to search for.

.... and you would be referring to the 5.8L (351W) that was equipped with the 2 BBL variable Venturi carburetor used up to and including 1991 model years, on the models so equipped (mostly police vehicles), when the 5.0L (302) equipped versions were already equipped with SEFI beginning with the 1986 model years until the aforementioned 1991 model year. I always found it very odd as to why Ford did that with the 351W.
I would like to get the motor rebuilt swap out the original head for aluminum heads and a larger cam for more hp any thoughts on that would that screw with the computer? Thanks for all the really helpful info I'll be hunting a flex plate down this week
Started on swapping motors , but the male end on the wiring harness of the 89 distributor is different then the 96 can i just swap connectors by splicing the one off the 96 harness to the 89 harness? if so which wires do i splice together , the male end on 96--351 harness has a gray--orange tracer ,red --green tracer ,orange--red tracer black--green tracer ,black no tracer the male end on the 1989 --302 has blue wire no tracer---yellow -green tracer---red -blue tracer---white-blue tracer---green -yellow tracer---black-orange tracer
