Some have covers for the bed of the truck. When I used a 5th wheel hitch I didn't cover it.
But I would take it out often and put in under cover when out. I used a flat metal pan like you would use for a car that drips oil. turned it upside down and set it on the hitch.
I didn't want to go the Tonneau cover rout with this truck (it has a cargo box in it, etc.). When we saw we were going to be staying long-term in northern Maryland this past year - including the winter - I bought a cover for our Pull-Rite. The only place that had it in stock was Pull-Rite, so it was pricey. It's well-made, though, and did a good job of protecting the hitch.
