I just installed my hydra php on my 7.3. I was running an sct off the shelf tune but forgot to un-program it before installing everything. Do I need to worry about un-programming the truck with the sct then reinstalling the hydra ?
I was hoping that I could do a factory reset on the sct and then pair it with my 5.4.
I tried to flash it back to stock with the hydra plugged in and it would let me
It would let you? Meaning you have already got the SCT back off the truck?
Or it wouldn’t let you?
If the latter is true then you could try taking the Hydra to bypass mode to see if it would work. (Edit based on Cleatus’s knowledgeable answer below).
“00” is stock setting BUT to truly bypass you have to set to 00, allow it to take (blink after a couple seconds), then key off, key on should then be Hydra bypass mode. Someone correct me if my memory is slipping here.
Be careful to never pull the Hydra while the key is on. This can fry the PCM and chip. Best to have the key completely out of the ignition if physically messing with the Hydra.
I wanted to clarify my previous statement. By “overwrite” I did not mean it would wipe out the SCT tune, but rather ignore whatever is on the PCM and use the Hydra stuff instead.
You must remove ANY physical chip (not just the Hydra brand) before attempting to reflash the PCM.
The Hydra (or any physical chip hardware that attaches to the PCM board) will not technically "overwrite" what is flashed on the PCM memory but it will keep the internal PCM from being read (what is flashed to it using the SCT device).
Removing the Hydra will allow you to remove the SCT flash from the PCM and flash the stock file back to it.
I don’t know how much I care about flashing it back to stock since the hydra has a stock program anyway. Maybe I will leave it sit around for a bit before resetting the sct back to factory so I could use it on another truck. My biggest concern was making sure I was not messing anything up or stacking the tunes
