A lot of guys have looked into this setup over the years because it seems like it would be an ideal fit with the 4.0 and the 4wd. From what I hear it is a very difficult swap and most guys end up with a parts truck for sale rather than a cool 4x4.

It's easier to modify a factory chassis to update it than it is to do a chassis swap. But, if you don't care about the difficulty level and you have the tools and ability then do whichever one you want to do. I think the AWD explorer chassis is an awesome upgrade BUT you can get a really nice driving truck doing the mustang II and w/e rear setup you want. Here is a Youtube of someone who did the explorer swap, might give you an idea if you don't already know:
