new 92 explorer

I just got an explorer from my father that just passed away, its a 92 with 99k miles on it and a V6 4.0. Interior and exterior look great. but the engine don't sound to good. It also has a problem that when i accelerate fast!! It starts choking badly almost to the point of dying, I think it could be a few things, fuel pump, throttle position sensor, or injectors. Can you please tell me what i should check before i take this to a mechanic, it isn't worth too much, I would love to drive it for a second car to work, i only work 5 miles away from home. Can anyone give me some ideas on what to do with it before i get rid of it.

Thanks
George

Welcome to FTE ottogz!

What doesn't 'sound' good? Do you have a Check Engine Light on?

I would suggest a good tune-up to start - plug, wires, fuel filter, air filter. Those 4 things can make a world of difference and could be affecting the throttle response.

Let us know!

no check engine light, but it sounds like it might be a lifter tick or a hole in the exhaust somewhere, that i could live with, oil pressure is good, and exhausts are pretty cheap, im just worried about the engine choking, it will cost me a few hundred to transfer the title, and another few hundred to fix is kinda too much, tune up should be cheap, i will try that, but if that doesn't work i'll have to take it somewhere, thanks for your fast reply

Sounds like you might have either an intake or head gasket leak. The 4.0's are notorious for having leaks like this. I would start with the tuneup and see how it goes. If you still hear the noise, I might stop by somewhere and get a few prices and evaluations on the leak...

Nope - best guess is to first clean the mass air flow sensor. You can find a simple procedure at this page under "engine pinging"
http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html

It sounds like your case may be extreme if you're past the pinging stage.
