I have a 2018 F-150 with the 3.5 Eco Boost. I have been told that I should have the timing chain replaced at 90,000 miles before it fails and destroys the engine. Is that correct?

While it's true that if it fails, it will probably ruin the engine, or at least cause significant damage, it is not true that it needs to be replaced at 90,000 miles. OTOH, if it were a timing belt, it's advised that they be replaced periodically,
If your timing chain was wearing excessively, you would probably know it. Between cold start noise and timing related codes, you should have some kind of warning before catastrophic failure.
Besides that, gen 2 3.5 ecoboosts use a much more durable chain design. The cam phasers are another story, unfortunately.
I was told by my mechanic. He owns his own shop have been dealing with him for 17 years, thought I could trust him. I then followed up with my local Ford dealer. The service guy there told me the same thing and offered to schedule the replacement. So I came here to check with a source who don't have a financial interest in my timing chain. Thanks for saving me a couple thousand dollars. I drive 120 miles each day for work, a reliable vehicle is a must.
