My truck has always started right up.. Most of the time you don't even hear it crank. Two times in the last week I go to start it and it starts right up then then it dies,. I crank it and it tries to start , I did that a few time s and then held the gas peddle down half way and it started ,tried to die, I pumped the peddle and it ran perfect. Next day ran perfect.. A couple days later did it again.
Is the fuel pump going or could it be the fuel pump driver module ?
2003 f150 5.4 4x4 141k miles
You won’t have a fuel pump driver module unless you buy an ‘04-later new body truck. Since this generation still used a return line fuel system setup, it uses a fuel pressure regulator to keep things (mostly) in check.
Could it be a fuel pump? Sure. Hook up a fuel pressure gauge and see what numbers come up and report back. Key on, engine off as well as running.
Just take the IAC off and clean it as it is only two 8mm bolts and a plugin to remove. Most of the time you can clean the two ports on one with brake cleaner and they will run great.
If you don't know where it is: (Looking at the throttle body where the air tube connects that thing that sets toward the very back with the plugin attached to it and has two 8mm bolts holding it on).
Have you changed your fuel filter lately?
The other thing like they said is the fuel pump where if it has to changed you can either drop the tank or lift the bed.
I'm having this very same problem currently. Checked voltage all the way through to the fuel pump. Changed the fpm just because it wasn't expensive and managed to change the fuel pump itself after getting the bed off. Now I'm experiencing intermittent start ups. Sometimes it does sometimes it doesnt. Sometimes I can rev on the engine and climb rpms to 4k but other times it dies as soon as I push the pedal. Which leads me to think it's still somehow losing fuel pressure after the fuel pump, but only sometimes. No its not the filter. Anyone ever heard about anything like this?

If you don't have a gauge on it you're just guessing.
Is it possible to tell if the pump is ok with a scanner? If so, what would the range be? Is there a data sheet out there with the ranges of all the things for a '03 5.4L? Mine started out as hard starting when it was warm now it also idles a little high with a roll in it. I have 5 codes, but they are for 4 shorts and the ABS. I will begin the work on the codes, but I don't think they are the issue, because I have always had the open-door light on, and it never has shifted in and out of 4-wheel drive properly.
